Predawn Mosaic Ruins in Jacksonville Bathhouse Lobby

by Phyllis McLeod

Low tungsten light spills through a high window, illuminating a scattered array of broken ceramic tiles resting on the ribbed concrete floor of a demolished lobby. The shards display faded blues, creams, and terracotta, their glossy surfaces catching the dim predawn glow against the rough gray texture of the surrounding structure. Heavy overcast skies outside cast a flat, cool gray tone that contrasts with the warm, localized yellow light inside. The ribbed ceiling arches overhead, framing the debris which lies in a loose cluster near the center of the space. A sharp edge of a blue tile reflects the window light, creating a small, bright highlight on the dusty ground.
