Polished Desert Stones in New Mexico Morning Light

by Bruce Petersen

Midmorning light strikes the rim of a wide New Mexico valley, leaving the floor in deep shadow while catching the edges of a desert pavement. Dark, polished stones lie tight against the pale, dusty ground, their surfaces worn smooth by centuries of wind and water. Dramatic clouds stack overhead, casting shifting gray shadows that stretch across the valley floor. The stones vary in size from pebbles to fist-sized rocks, their dark tones absorbing the low light. A faint rim of golden illumination outlines the distant ridge, separating the shadowed foreground from the bright sky above. The texture of the ground is rough and granular, against the sleek, rounded surfaces of the stones. A small, pale pebble rests near the center, catching a stray beam of light.
