Melting Stair Hall Caustic Patterns Midnight

by Katrina Pearson

Soft tungsten light falls through an unseen source, casting rippling caustic networks across the white ceramic tiles of a stair hall floor in Karaman. The geometric grid of the staircase steps anchors the space, but the central tread appears to lose its rigidity. The stone edge softens and drips downward like thick wax, pooling into a glossy, amber puddle at the base of the riser. This impossible melt contrasts with the sharp, unmoving grout lines surrounding it. Light dances in rhythmic waves over the liquid stone, highlighting the texture of the wet surface against the dry, matte finish of the adjacent steps. The glow settles deep into the corner where the wall meets the floor, illuminating the surreal fusion of solid architecture and fluid material.
