Worshippers Prostrating in Cairo Mosque Hall in at the foot of a stone altar in Muizz Street, Cairo

Worshippers Prostrating in Cairo Mosque Hall

by Cecilia Benson

Cool blue twilight falls through high arches, illuminating rows of worshippers prostrate on woven carpets. Dust motes hang in shafts of fading daylight that cut across the stone floor. The vast hall stretches deep into shadow, lined with repeating columns that frame the figures in rhythmic alignment. Each person wears simple, muted clothing, their heads bowed toward the ground in unison. The stone altar at the far end glows faintly against the encroaching dusk. Light grazes the texture of the carpet fibers and the rough grain of the ancient walls. One beam of light illuminates a pattern of dust dancing above the nearest forehead.
