Paper Maker Pulls Screen from Vat in Abu Dhabi Foundry

by Kay Choi

Bright midsummer skylight floods the foundry interior, bouncing off pale walls to illuminate dust motes and the steam rising from a large slurry vat. A worker stands at the edge of the frame, gripping a wooden frame screen as they lift it from the thick liquid. Water droplets bead and run down a nearby glass pane, evidence of the humid air inside the industrial space. The paper pulp rests on the mesh in a wet, fibrous layer, glistening under the harsh overhead illumination. The worker wears a simple white garment that contrasts with the rough, utilitarian surfaces of the surrounding metal and concrete. Condensation on the glass distorts the background slightly, adding a hazy texture to the scene. one drop of water hangs from the corner of the screen, poised to fall.
