Dappled sunlight falls through overhead leaves, casting shifting patches of bright yellow and deep shadow across the papermaker's chest. The subject wears a worn, mud-stained apron over a simple shirt, with forearms submerged in a wooden trough filled with gray pulp. Water beads on the skin, reflecting the green canopy above. Behind the figure, blurred foliage suggests a dense, rainy season environment near Chimoio. Leaves skitter across the ground in the background, caught in a sudden gust. The foreground dissolves into soft, out-of-focus green bokeh, framing the hands as they work the fibrous mixture. One leaf rests on the wet wood of the trough's edge, caught in the moment of movement.
