Kuwaiti Paper Maker Dipping Screen in Atelier
by Luis McMahon
Honey-colored light from a large window spills across the workshop floor, illuminating dust motes and casting deep amber shadows against the walls. A paper maker stands at a vat, holding a rectangular bamboo screen with both hands. The artisan dips the frame into the murky water mixture, lifting it to drain. Early winter chill is suggested by the long sleeves of the work garment and the specific angle of the low sun. The water ripples gently on the screen surface, holding the pulp in a thin, even layer. Behind the figure, shelves hold stacks of dried paper sheets and tools resting on rough wooden tables. The wet pulp glistens under the warm glow, creating a stark contrast with the dry, textured surfaces of the surrounding workspace. One drop falls from the corner of the screen, landing in the vat below.
