Pancake Ice Forming on Arctic Sea Yukon in in Yukon

Pancake Ice Forming on Arctic Sea Yukon

by Kayla Webster

Soft overcast light diffuses across a vast expanse of freezing Yukon water, where circular pancakes of ice float in tight clusters. Each disc features a raised rim, evidence of the churning motion that formed them. Snowflakes fall gently, settling as white dots against the dark grey water and the pale blue-grey of the ice. The midnight sun keeps the scene bright despite the overcast sky, casting no sharp shadows but illuminating the wet, slick texture of the frozen surfaces. The discs vary in size, some merging into a larger sheet while others remain separate. A thin layer of snow dusts the top of the nearest pancake, softening its edge where it meets the slushy water.
