Pancake Ice Forming on Freezing Russian Sea
Dappled sunlight falls through sparse winter branches, illuminating a vast expanse of pancake ice spreading across the frozen surface of a wide valley floor in Russia. Circular discs of pale blue and white ice float tightly packed, their raised rims interlocking as they drift in the sluggish water. Low-hanging gray clouds press against the horizon, casting soft shadows that accentuate the texture of the slushy centers and the smooth, water-worn edges of the discs. The scene stretches into the distance, where the ice meets a line of dark, dormant trees. A thin layer of frost coats the foreground vegetation, at the base of the frozen sea in the dead of winter. at the edge shows a single disc tilting slightly, revealing the dark water beneath its rim.
