Neon Shadows on Wet Khartoum Pavement in beneath a flickering underpass light in Khartoum

Neon Shadows on Wet Khartoum Pavement

by Sebastian Hodges

Warm golden light spills across the cracked concrete beneath a flickering underpass in Khartoum, where the wet season has left the ground slick and reflective. A row of neon signs glows with electric blues and reds, casting long, distorted colored shadows that stretch across the dark asphalt. Heat shimmer rises in wavering ribbons from the hot pavement, blurring the edges of the light sources and creating a liquid distortion in the air. The water on the ground mirrors the overhead glow, turning the street into a mosaic of fragmented colors. A puddle near the curb catches the red neon, pooling the light in a deep crimson reflection against the gray stone.
