Fractal River Bed Pattern in Skylit Wuhan Hallway
by Molly Sexton
Honeyed evening light falls through a skylit passageway near Wuhan, illuminating a floor pattern that mimics the fractal branching of a dried river bed. The minimalist composition emphasizes the sharp, dark lines of the dried earth design against the smooth, pale stone of the indoor floor. Warm candlelight glow from unseen sources adds a soft amber cast to the scene, enhancing the texture of the simulated terrain. Early spring air is suggested by the clean, uncluttered space where natural window light falls across surfaces, creating deep shadows along the geometric cracks. The graphic formal tension arises from the contrast between the organic, branching lines of the dried watercourse and the rigid, straight edges of the architectural passageway walls. A final detail of dust catches the edge of a shadow where the floor meets the baseboard.
