Stained Glass Light on Tiled Stair Hall
by Cheryl Roach
Vibrant ribbons of blue and amber light slice across the cream-colored ceramic tiles of a narrow stairwell in Kütahya. The monsoon clouds outside diffuse the noon sun, softening the sharp edges of the stained glass window while maintaining a strong graphic contrast against the rigid grid of the floor. Sheer curtains flutter slightly, distorting the light beams into shifting geometric shapes that rest on the smooth, glazed surfaces. Dust particles hang suspended in the bright shafts, catching the color before fading into the shadowed recess of the stairs. the mix of cool shadows and warm highlights creates a structured tension, showing the texture of the grout lines beneath the moving colors. A final beam of red light stops abruptly at the edge of a white tile, defining the boundary between illumination and darkness.
