Banyan Grove Pillars in Gabon Monsoon Meadow

by Bernard Hoffman

Thick aerial roots descend from the banyan canopy, anchoring into the damp earth to form sturdy, vertical pillars that support the sprawling tree. Deep shadows cloak the lower trunk and surrounding meadow, while a sharp rim of evening light traces the edges of the hanging roots and the tops of nearby grasses. Fine dust particles hang suspended in the low air, catching the faint illumination and creating a hazy layer above the soil. The monsoon season leaves the ground slick and dark, against the pale, fibrous texture of the roots. In the foreground, out-of-focus blades of grass blur into soft green shapes, showing the sharp, structural lines of the banyan pillars rising into the gloom.
