Frost Needles on Oak Leaf in North Light

by Jordyn Hendrix

Brilliant white crystalline needles pierce the brittle, brown surface of a fallen oak leaf resting on gray-green lichen. The leaf lies flat against the rough, textured bark, its veins obscured by the sudden ice growth. Bright midmorning light floods in from the left, casting sharp, elongated shadows across the lichen and highlighting the translucent edges of each frost spike. The dry season air has left the leaf crisp and fragile, against the sharp, geometric precision of the ice. Muted reflections shimmer faintly on the dark floor below, mirroring the stark white of the frost. The composition isolates the leaf, showing the delicate tension between the organic decay and the rigid ice formation.
