Kodiak Bear Stalking Salmon in Late Summer Stream
by Adrian Duffy
Raindrops ripple across the surface of a shallow, rocky stream where a massive Kodiak bear stands motionless. The animal's thick, dark brown fur glistens wetly under the bright midmorning sun, with water beading on the coarse hair of its broad shoulders. Seen from behind, the bear's heavy head is lowered slightly, eyes fixed on the churning water ahead. The surrounding game trail is lined with dense, late-summer greenery that turns to muted golds near the stream bank. Fine mist hangs low over the water, catching the light in tiny, suspended droplets. The bear's powerful hind legs are planted firmly in the gravel, muscles tense as it waits for a salmon to breach the current. One ripple spreads outward from the bear's paw, distorting the reflection of the overcast sky.
