Iridescent Oyster Shell Layers on Frosty Window

by Justin McConnell

Soft tungsten light glows against the deep indigo of early autumn predawn. An oyster shell rests on a frosted windowpane, its nacre layers unfolding in concentric rings of pearl, violet, and teal. Frost crystals rest on the glass edges, their jagged white structures against the smooth, wet sheen of the shell. The shell curves gently, catching the warm lamp glow in its inner valleys while the outer rim remains shadowed. Tiny water droplets gather near the base, refracting the light into miniature rainbows. The frost pattern spreads across the upper right corner, blurring the dark background into a soft, indistinct void. One ridge of shell catches the light, revealing the microscopic texture of the aragonite layers beneath the surface.
