Horn Shark at Dawn in Split Palace Waters in beside a tide-cut rock ledge under clear water in Diocletian's Palace, Split

Horn Shark at Dawn in Split Palace Waters

by Carlos Sweeney

Mist-diffused dawn light penetrates the exceptionally clear water, illuminating a horn shark resting on the kelp forest floor. The creature's spotted, textured skin blends with the sandy bottom beside a tide-cut rock ledge, part of the ancient stone foundations in Diocletian's Palace, Split. Slow-moving surface ripples fracture the soft light into shifting patterns across the submerged architecture. Late spring green kelp fronds sway gently in the current, their translucent edges catching the glow. Layers of depth recede from the foreground stone into the blue distance, where the pale water fades. A faint shadow of a rock ledge falls across the sand near the shark's tail.
