Hindu Temple Tank Steps in Tonalá

by Lorraine Castaneda

Green water fills a rectangular stone tank, its surface rippling slightly as steps descend into the depth. Stained glass windows filter the late afternoon sun, casting patches of amber, violet, and teal across the wet limestone blocks. The cool season air leaves a sheen on the gray stone surfaces. Symmetrical stone railings frame the water on both sides, leading the eye to the altar at the far end. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the floor tiles, intersecting with the colored light beams. The water reflects the geometric patterns of the overhead beams, creating a mosaic of light and dark that shifts with every small movement of the liquid. One green leaf floats near the center edge.
