Glassblowing in Natal Temple Courtyard at Predawn

by Sara McGee

Warm string lights drape across ancient stone arches in a Natal temple courtyard, cutting through the heavy predawn darkness. The wet season hangs over the scene with low, gray clouds pressing against the upper walls. A glassblower stands in the lower third of the frame, manipulating a glowing orange sphere of molten glass on a long metal rod. The intense heat creates a shimmering distortion in the cool air beside the artisan. Puddles on the weathered stone floor reflect the flickering orange and yellow illumination. Rough textures of the temple masonry contrast with the smooth, viscous surface of the molten glass as it rests on the rod. The light falls across the damp ground, highlighting the wet edges of the stone steps.
