Venetian Glass Blowing Ceremony in Kaohsiung Hall
by Jay Petersen
Copper-toned light from a low sun stretches long shadows across the polished stone floor of a ceremonial hall in Kaohsiung. A glassblower stands before a glowing furnace, manipulating a molten orb of viscous liquid on the end of a blowpipe. The glass glows with intense orange and yellow hues, contrasting against the cool, dry air of the room. Low-hanging clouds outside the tall windows diffuse the fading daylight, casting a somber, reverent tone over the space. Dust motes are barely visible in the shafts of light illuminating the artisan's focused posture and the intricate tools resting on the workbench. The smooth, translucent curves of the glass catch the fire's reflection, while the rough texture of the surrounding stone walls anchors the scene in quiet industry.
