Gannet Diving Before Sunrise in South Sudan Rain

by Jeanne Forbes

Mist hangs low over the water, diffusing the pale gray light of a pre-dawn sky. A gannet plunges vertically, its white wings folded tight against its body, creating a sharp, dark silhouette against the heavy, dramatic clouds. Raindrops blur the air, clinging to the bird's sleek feathers and the rippling surface below. The water reflects the somber tones of the stormy sky, broken only by the splash of the dive. Heavy, saturated green reeds line the distant bank, swaying slightly in the humid air. The bird's beak cuts through the mist, pointing downward toward the dark, churning water where the impact will soon occur. One droplet hangs suspended on the tip of a nearby cattail stalk.
