Freediver Surrounded by Autumn Bait Ball Near Osaka
by Debra Pugh
Deep shadow fills the underwater expanse near Osaka, pierced only by a faint rim light outlining a freediver suspended in mid-water. The diver, clad in a dark wetsuit, moves with deliberate slowness around a dense, swirling bait ball that forms a luminous sphere of silver scales. Autumn plankton haze softens the background, blurring the distinction between the fish and the deep blue void. Tiny particles drift in the water column, catching the dim light and creating a textured field of movement. The low angle emphasizes the scale of the fish school, which towers above the solitary human figure. Light reflects off the wet surface of the wetsuit, creating a sharp highlight against the murky green-blue water. At the edge, a single silver scale peels away from the bait ball's outer boundary, drifting slowly into the gloom.
