Chamomile Field in Winter Twilight in on a fern-lined forest floor near Oxford

Chamomile Field in Winter Twilight

by Marvin McCall

Steel-blue ambient light washes over a dense patch of chamomile blooming directly on a fern-lined forest floor near Oxford. The dead of winter air creates a visible heat haze that shimmers above the white flower heads, distorting the edges of the surrounding green ferns. Indigo twilight deepens the shadows between the stems while the pale yellow centers of the chamomile retain a faint glow. Fern fronds curve outward from the earth, their dark texture against the delicate, clustered blooms. The plants stand firm despite the cold, arranged in a natural grid that follows the rule of thirds. One droplet of condensation rests on the tip of a nearby fern leaf, reflecting the dim sky.
