Drifting Sand Inside Xian Jail Cell in beside ivy-draped masonry near Xian

Drifting Sand Inside Xian Jail Cell

by Giovanni Lloyd

Fine grains of sand drift across the uneven floor of an abandoned jail cell near Xian. Ivy climbs the exterior masonry, its green leaves clinging to weathered red stone beside the structure. Early evening light casts long shadows across the room where wind deposits fine layers of dust. A distant town glow illuminates the horizon, softening the darkening sky above the ruins. The metal bars of the cell window stand rusted, their surfaces pitted by time. Sand accumulates in the corners, forming small dunes that reach the base of the wall. Ivy tendrils hang from the top of the frame, swaying slightly in the breeze. A jagged shard of broken brick rests on the threshold, holding a single grain of sand.
