Store Worker in Tokyo
by Toni Guevara
Under the amber wash of dusk and light rain, a narrow Tokyo alleyway reveals a convenience store entrance where a worker in a yellow raincoat leans against the glass door, adjusting a coiled blue rope tied to a rolling cart loaded with stacked cardboard boxes. The wet asphalt reflects the store's bright fluorescent signage, casting sharp, elongated shadows across the pavement. Nearby, a discarded broom rests against a brick pillar, its bristles damp and matted, while raindrops streak the windowpane behind the worker. The quiet, rhythmic pause of urban labor, with the glistening surfaces of the cart and boxes contrasting against the dull, rain-soaked concrete of the alley floor.
