Dawn light on lock gate hinge near mountain slope

by Angela Cordova

Rust-streaked iron plates form the massive hinge of a lock gate, resting against the dark, wet stone of the channel wall. Below, the Andean slope rises steeply, covered in patches of dry grass and sparse shrubs typical of the high-altitude transition. Low-hanging clouds rest on the valley floor, their gray mass interrupted by a thin band of orange sunlight striking the horizon haze. Transmission towers loom in the background, their steel legs disappearing into the mist. The metal surface shows deep grooves from decades of use, catching the first warm rays while the surrounding stone remains in cool shadow. A drop of condensation hangs from a bolt head, reflecting the pale morning sky before sliding down into the crevice below.
