Copper Light on Hydro Penstock Descending Mountain in along concrete walls above turbulent water in Bolivia

Copper Light on Hydro Penstock Descending Mountain

by Diane Payne

Copper-toned horizon light wraps the massive steel penstock as it descends the steep mountain flank. The pipe rests on rugged concrete supports that anchor it against the sheer rock face. Below, turbulent water churns in a dark channel, sending white spray and fine mist into the air. The mist hangs suspended above the wet concrete walls, catching the fading daylight. Rough textures of the metal surface contrast with the smooth, damp stone of the retaining walls. Shadows lengthen across the lower section of the structure, emphasizing its vertical scale. One rivet head on the pipe glints where the light strikes the curved metal edge.
