Graphite Crystals on Salt Rim in Late Afternoon

by Denise Barton

Soft, diffused light from an overcast late afternoon reveals the hexagonal lattice of graphite at the tip of a wooden pencil. The lead rests directly upon a cluster of coarse, translucent salt crystals forming the rim of a shallow pan. Early autumn air keeps the surfaces dry and clean. Sharp geometric edges of the salt contrast with the smooth, dark gray core of the pencil. Tiny facets on the mineral grains catch the ambient glow, creating subtle highlights against the warm brown wood. The composition remains minimal, focusing entirely on the tactile intersection of manufactured graphite and natural salt. A faint shadow falls along the base where the wood meets the uneven crystal surface.
