Cracked Earth Jungle Pattern on Dresser in on a hotel dresser in Kinshasa

Cracked Earth Jungle Pattern on Dresser

by Alec Hahn

Honey-colored light floods a wooden hotel dresser in Kinshasa, illuminating a square patch of parched, cracked earth. The dry season has turned the soil into a mosaic of deep fissures, their edges sharp and dusty. Suddenly, thick, vibrant jungle vines erupt from the center of the cracked surface, climbing rapidly up the wall and draping over the dresser edge. These impossible green tendrils twist around a brass lamp base and spill onto the wood grain, contrasting the arid ground with lush, wet foliage. Quiet shadows pool in the corners of the room, showing the stillness of the impossible growth against the solid, weathered furniture. One leaf tip rests on the edge of the cracked earth patch.
