Jungle Vines Overgrowth Construction Site Strainer

by Casey Knight

Thick emerald vines drape aggressively across a rusted steel roof-drain strainer crate, their leaves swallowing the grid pattern in a single season. The crate sits on wet gravel beneath a towering yellow crane, the metal surfaces slick with early summer rain. Soft, diffused light from an overcast sky flattens the unfinished concrete ground and raw timber piles nearby. Green tendrils coil around the crate's rim, climbing up the chain-link fence that separates the work zone from the forest edge. Water beads on the steel mesh, reflecting the pale gray sky and the vibrant green foliage that has encroached on the industrial site. The vines twist around the crane's base leg, creating a tangled barrier between the machinery and the soil. One vine hangs low, dripping water onto the muddy track of the construction vehicle tire.
