Brass Theodolite on Tripod at Muddy Ndola Construction Site

by Marissa Adkins

Copper-toned light washes over a muddy access road in Ndola as a brass theodolite stands mounted on a black tripod. Fine rain speckles the polished instrument case and darkens the surrounding soil into slick, reflective patches. The horizon glows with a soft, warm band that wraps the wet earth and distant scaffolding. Mud rests on the tripod legs, anchoring the device against the slick ground. A measuring tape lies coiled nearby on the uneven terrain, its red and white markings visible against the dark, waterlogged dirt. The brass surfaces catch the fading light, showing a gradient from bright gold to deep amber. Raindrops bead on the metal housing and slide down the tripod legs into the puddles below. A faint plume of steam rises from a nearby exhaust vent, merging with the low, misty air.
