Coptic Saints on Mosque Wall with Uphill Water Flow in in a mosque prayer hall in Dalian

Coptic Saints on Mosque Wall with Uphill Water Flow

by Randall Hatch

Flat vivid pigments of Coptic saints adorn a textured wall inside a Dalian mosque prayer hall. Late spring light falls through sheer curtains, casting soft geometric shadows across the painted figures. A stream of clear water defies gravity, flowing uphill along the lower slope of the wall where the saints stand. The liquid gathers in a perfect, still pool at the highest point of the incline, catching the morning glow. Dust motes hang motionless in the sunbeams that illuminate the flat surfaces and the impossible water path. The water's edge creates a sharp, reflective line against the painted plaster.
