Winter Noon Light in Chongqing Abbey in inside a candlelit abbey nave in Chongqing

Winter Noon Light in Chongqing Abbey

by Arjun Dale

Dense winter light falls through heavy, translucent curtains, casting a flat, diffuse glow across the stone nave of a Chongqing abbey. Niches carved into the thick walls hold rows of butter lamps, their flames small and steady against the cool noon brightness. The warm yellow of the oil fire contrasts with the pale, gray-blue stone and the soft white fabric of the drapes. Shadows settle deep in the corners of the architecture, creating pockets of quiet darkness where the light cannot reach. A wooden beam frames the view, creating a secondary window that isolates a cluster of flickering flames. The texture of the rough-hewn stone is sharp against the smooth, flowing lines of the curtain folds.
