Chambered Nautilus in Oregon Deep Blue Water

by Knox Levine

Sunlight fractures into dappled patterns across the swirling silt of a temperate coastal inlet. A chambered nautilus floats suspended in the center, its shell displaying creamy white ribs against a deep, saturated blue backdrop. The water holds a fine haze of plankton that softens the distant background into a diffuse gradient. Late autumn light falls through the surface, creating shifting patches of brightness on the creature's spiraling surface. Fine particulate matter drifts slowly around the shell, catching the light like tiny stars. The nautilus remains motionless, its pale spiral contrasting sharply with the cool, dense water surrounding it. One beam of light illuminates the rim of the outermost chamber.
