Bright midmorning light reflects off wet surfaces along a feedlot lane in Illinois, illuminating a weathered wooden corral gate standing firm against a dense mass of cattle. The animals press tight behind sun-bleached rails, their dark brown and black coats matted with winter grime. Dust or steam hangs above the pens, blurring the line between the animals and the background. Snow dusts the ground in patches against the dark, churned mud that fills the narrow space. The gate's horizontal slats show years of wear, with splintered edges and faded paint. One hoof rests on the icy edge of the lane, anchoring the scene in its harsh, practical reality.
