Deep shadows engulf the wooden drafting wickets and sturdy post of a livestock sorting alley along a feedlot lane in Castile. The dead of winter hangs heavy, evidenced by the stark, leafless ground and the thick, dark wool marks stained on the weathered timber. A cold rim light traces the top edge of the gate, highlighting the smooth, waxy sheen of lanolin rubbed into the metal latch. Above, a perfectly clear sky offers no clouds, only a gradient of fading blue turning to violet. The dry wood grain contrasts with the metallic glint of the hardware, while the rough texture of the sheep pen flooring settles into the twilight gloom. A faint shadow stretches long across the dirt path near the wicket base.
