Cattle Turn at Montana Stockyard Dawn Mist

by Erica Hubbard

Early morning mist hangs low over the wooden stockyard rails in Montana, softening the edges of the split-gate chains that secure the corral turn. A small herd of cattle moves slowly along the dusty ramp, their dark coats against the pale, wet ground. Sunlight breaks through the clouds in brief, diffused patches, catching the dust trail curling behind the animals as they navigate the bend. The split-gate chains hang loosely, gleaming faintly in the gray light. The wooden rails show signs of wear, bleached by years of sun and weather. A fine mist rests on the metal hinges, while the cattle's hooves kick up small clouds of dirt that settle quickly in the damp air. at the edge is a single droplet of water sliding down a rusted chain link, marking the edge of the corral.
