Muddy Cattle Sorting Rail at First Light

Thick mud climbs halfway up the weathered wooden boards of a livestock sorting rail, marking the high water line of the early spring thaw. Mist hangs low and thick in the gray air, softening the edges of the metal squeeze-gate chains that hang loosely from the frame. Small paper lot cards flutter against the damp wood, their white surfaces stark against the dark, wet grain. The ground is a churned mixture of slush and dark earth, reflecting the pale, diffused light of dawn. A perfectly clear sky stretches overhead, against the heavy fog that rests on the muddy paddock fence. Dust or steam rises gently from the warm ground, blending into the cool morning haze. Beside the rail, a vertical slat holds a drop of water sliding down, leaving a dark trail in the gray wood.
