Silhouetted Cattle at Louisiana Stockyard Gate

Steel rails of the corral gate gleam wet under the flat, gray light of a Louisiana winter afternoon. Rain falls in steady sheets, blurring the background and turning the sky into a sheet of dull silver. Behind the sun-bleached metal, a dense crowd of cattle presses forward, their dark forms reduced to heavy silhouettes against the bright, wet horizon. Droplets bead on the rusted edges of the gate and run down the curved metal bars. The animals stand close together, heads lowered or turned toward the ramp, their coats slick with water. In the foreground, the ground is a churned mix of mud and standing water, reflecting the pale sky above. A heavy chain hangs loosely from the gate latch, dripping steadily into the muck below.
