Winter Cattle Lane Mist Golden Hour Canada
by Dana Heath
Thick white steam rises from the breath of a line of cattle standing in a muddy feedlot lane. The heavy overcast sky breaks near the horizon, casting a warm, honeyed glow that reflects off the damp earth and the animals' dark, coarse coats. A wooden windbreak runs along the left side, its weathered planks darkened by moisture. In the foreground, a metal water trough sits half-filled, its surface rippling with the steam that drifts across the ground. The cattle stand close together, their heads lowered near the trough or facing the open lane. Frost rests on the edges of the trough and patches of snow line the distant fence line, marking the dead of winter. The golden light catches the texture of the mud and the heavy fur of the nearest steer. A long shadow stretches across the wet ground toward the water trough.
