Icelandic Feedlot Dawn with Cattle Pen and Mud

Cold silver dawn light spills across a weathered wooden cattle pen in an Icelandic feedlot lane. Thick mud climbs halfway up the vertical boards of the sorting rail, streaked with darker wet patches from the early spring thaw. Heavy steel chains hang from the squeeze gate, their links dark against the pale wood. Small lot cards are tacked to the rail, their paper edges frayed by the damp air. A faint haze of dust or steam hovers low over the ground, catching the weak morning sun. White breath clouds drift visibly around the cold metal rails and gates. The leading lines of the fence draw toward the distant horizon where the light begins to brighten.
