Blue Hour Irrigation Canals Above Rice Terraces

by Cesar Jacobs

Steel-blue water fills narrow irrigation canals that slice through the dark green expanse of terraced rice paddies. Rain creates a consistent texture of concentric ripples across every water surface, blurring the reflection of the sky. The landscape unfolds in stepped layers, bordered by low earth embankments that separate the flooded fields. In the far distance, a soft orange and pink glow from a town horizon illuminates the underside of heavy, gray monsoon clouds. The wet soil appears as deep, saturated brown, against the cool tones of the water. A thin wire fence runs along one edge, its posts standing straight against the relentless vertical rain. The scene ends with the water's edge meeting the dark, saturated mud of the terrace bank.
