Amber Lamps in Red Rock Tunnel Portal in along a dam spillway in Armenia

Amber Lamps in Red Rock Tunnel Portal

by Tristan Felix

Bright midmorning sunlight hits the rough-hewn entrance of a tunnel blasted directly into deep red rock along an Armenian dam spillway. Two amber lamps glow warmly against the sun-bleached stone, illuminating pools of light on the wet concrete floor. Fine mist and spray hang suspended in the air above the threshold, catching the glare to form a hazy veil over the engineered structure. Straight lines of the spillway lead the eye inward toward the dark mouth of the passage, where the warm artificial glow contrasts with the cool, dusty tones of the surrounding geology. A wet droplet rests on the edge of a concrete ledge in the immediate foreground, reflecting the amber light.
