Abandoned Telegraph Office Inside Roofless Hammam
by Iris Bernal
Rich amber sunset light floods the interior of a roofless hammam near Asmara, illuminating an old telegraph office left to the elements. A wooden desk sits in the center, its surface scarred by years of neglect, holding a brass telegraph key and a metal sounder that catch the fading glow. The structure lacks a roof, exposing the sky to the rainy season clouds while wind moves through the empty rooms, stirring dust on the floor. Thick stone walls, weathered by time and moisture, frame the scene, their rough texture against the smooth metal of the instruments. The view comes through a natural archway, creating a layered perspective that draws attention to the silent equipment. Shadows stretch long across the floor, ending at the base of a crumbling column where a small puddle reflects the sky above.
