Yak Caravan Crossing Wind-Cut Ridge at Dawn

by Dawn Shields

Mist rests on the high Tibetan ridge where a line of yaks moves steadily beneath fluttering prayer flags. Early spring light diffuses through the haze, softening the gray stone and the dark wool of the animals. A handler in heavy woven robes walks alongside the lead yak, their boots sinking slightly into the damp, wind-sculpted earth. The flags snap in the gale, creating a rhythmic blur of red, blue, and yellow against the pale sky. Diagonal lines formed by the caravan and the ridge slope guide the eye upward toward the faint glow of the coming sun. The texture of the yak fur appears coarse and matted, against the smooth, wet stones scattered along the path. One prayer flag edge curls tightly in the wind.
