Autumn Rice Terraces Dawn Over Thimphu

Cold silver light washes over stepped rice terraces carved into a wind-swept ridge near Thimphu. Peak autumn turns the stalks into a mosaic of dried gold and muted brown against the grey sky. Above the fields, colorful prayer flags snap taut along the crest, their fabric fraying at the edges. Heavy monsoon clouds hang low, creating a stark separation between the earth and the sky. The water in the lower paddies reflects the dull white of the overcast ceiling, while the dry stalks stand rigid and textured. One row of flags cuts a sharp diagonal line across the upper frame, anchoring the vast, quiet landscape below.
