Rain streaks the curved glass of a narrow machiya shopfront in Gion, blurring the neon signs above into smeared ribbons of pink and blue. Inside, the warm tungsten glow spills onto the wet pavement, illuminating a cluttered service counter where a baker in a damp apron wipes down a stainless steel surface. A stack of white ceramic plates sits precariously near the edge, their rims catching the reflection of the streetlights. Water rings from a recently lifted cup mar the dark wood grain, while a single raspberry, out of place among the flour-dusted tools, rests near a metal letter tray holding takeout orders.
