Wiping Bowls in Kyoto

by Penelope Byrd

Summer evening light spills across the wet pavement of a Kyoto alley, catching the steam rising from a small street vendor’s cart. A young apprentice in a faded indigo apron wipes condensation from a stack of ceramic bowls, his movements practiced and swift. Behind him, a wooden bell hangs from a bamboo frame, its clapper still. A discarded broom leans against the cart’s leg, bristles splayed. Nearby, a customer in a linen kimono waits, holding a paper-wrapped treat.
