Winter Fog Clinging to Forest Floor Near Nottingham
Pale gray mist hugs the forest floor in a dense band at ankle height, stopping abruptly at the base of bare beech trunks. The ground is a patchwork of dormant brown grass and scattered oak leaves, damp from a light drizzle that leaves no distinct puddles but darkens the soil. Bright midmorning sunlight falls through the high, leafless canopy, creating soft, diffuse patches of illumination that cut through the fog. The trees stand in a sparse arrangement, their gray bark textured and rough against the white vapor. In the background, the fog thickens, obscuring the distance and leaving only the lower portions of the nearest trees visible. One fallen branch rests horizontally across the foreground, its surface slick with moisture.
