Vesak Temple Chapel Lit by Thousand Oil Lamps

by Jo Shelton

Stained glass panels cast fractured pools of emerald and amber light across the stone floor of a chapel in Little Tokyo. Hundreds of small clay oil lamps line the altar steps, their flickering flames softening the deep relief of carved wooden pillars. Dust motes float in thick shafts of light that pierce the dim interior, revealing the texture of aged wood and wet stone from the monsoon rain outside. The wide view shows the sheer density of the flames, creating a sea of warm gold against the cool, shadowed architecture. One flame trembles on a brass wick holder near the foreground edge, its reflection shimmering on the polished marble surface.
